Week 1: 9/1 - 9/2
|
Tuesday, 9/6 - 9/14
For the next two weeks, we will be reading The Awakening by Kate Chopin. Each day will follow a similar pattern while we read and analyze the book. You will be assigned a certain number of pages to read, as well as a paragraph to write in response to those pages. This will always be due the following class. In class, we will begin by discussing your responses to the night's paragraph prompt. Then we will discuss other aspects of that night's reading. Finally, you will have time to begin the reading/ writing for the following day.
Each assignment can be found on Google Classroom.

Week 4
Thursday, 21: What's it All About?
We will discuss the introduction to The Awakening, as well as the work as a whole. What's it all about? What's the point? Where's the "so what?"
Next we'll break into small groups to break down some characters. Choices are Robert LeBrun, Edna Pontellier, Alcee Arobin, Leonce Pontellier, Madame Ratignolle, The Doctor. Each character should be broken down on two levels: the surface, public personality, and the private inner life. In some cases you may need to read between the lines for the inner life. Provide quotations for evidence. Explain who this person is. What does she want? How does she fit into society? How much control does he have or his destiny? Is this person good? Bad? (yes, I know everyone is a bit of both. Which one weighs just a touch more?)
